Turlough Hill Tour Highlights

Step Inside Ireland’s Only Pumped Storage Power Station

Techies Go Green visited Turlough Hill Power Station in the Wicklow Mountains, Ireland’s only pumped-storage facility, in collaboration with ESB. It was an inspiring day that showed why we run these tours.

This experience went beyond seeing impressive engineering up close. It brought together a group of curious, like-minded people to explore, ask questions, and gain hands-on insight into how Ireland’s electricity system works.

Visitors stepped inside the underground powerhouse, explored tunnels, and saw the Hydro Control Centre. They also viewed the upper and lower reservoirs and learned how 292 megawatts of power can be generated in just 70 seconds. The scale, speed, and engineering of the facility left a lasting impression.

The tour combined learning with stunning views of the Wicklow Mountains and gave a rare behind-the-scenes look at one of Ireland’s most critical energy assets. It highlighted the role of sustainable infrastructure in powering a cleaner, greener future.

We thank ESB for their warm welcome and expert insights that made this tour possible.
