Our 800th Member: Community Power, Ireland’s First Community-Owned Electricity Supplier
We’re proud to welcome Community Power as the 800th member of Techies Go Green! Based in Co. Tipperary, Community Power is a pioneering force in Ireland’s clean energy landscape, and a shining example of what a people-first approach to renewable energy looks like.
A Homegrown Energy Solution
Community Power grew out of a bold idea: that communities across Ireland could generate their own clean electricity and retain ownership of the system that powers their lives. This vision took shape in Templederry Wind Farm, Ireland’s first community-owned wind farm, located in the foothills of Slieve Felim. It took almost 12 years to bring the project to life, but since 2012, its two wind turbines have been producing around 15 GWh of electricity each year—enough to power a town the size of Nenagh.
From this foundation, Community Power has grown into Ireland’s first fully community-owned electricity supplier. It now works with a growing number of small and micro hydro and wind generators around the country, buying locally produced renewable energy and selling it directly to households, farms, businesses, and community organisations.
Energy by the People, for the People
Community Power is built on a simple but powerful belief: that people should not only benefit from clean, renewable energy, but also have real ownership of it. In a country where over 90% of energy still comes from fossil fuels, and where many households face high energy bills, Community Power is working to create a fairer, more sustainable alternative.
Their model supports the development of new, community-owned renewable energy projects. Through optional Power Purchase Agreements (PPAs), they also help other community energy groups to sell surplus electricity, supporting both financial viability and long-term resilience.
Importantly, customers are not locked into long-term contracts—Community Power’s approach is based on transparency, fairness and service, not penalties. Their success in building long-term customer loyalty stems from their community ethos and clear commitment to social and environmental impact.
Why Community Power Matters
As Ireland and the UK face the dual challenge of decarbonisation and energy security, organisations like Community Power show what’s possible when communities take the lead. Their model keeps energy generation and its economic benefits local, strengthening the circular economy and encouraging wider public participation in climate action.
For businesses, working with Community Power offers a meaningful way to contribute to sustainability goals and social responsibility. Every euro spent on electricity helps fund new renewable energy infrastructure owned by communities.
